2006-09-18 - 9:13 p.m. : 'aints vs. the hor-nots : wow. for those of you who are not in the knowing of such things: the big easy rollergirls kick some serious skating tail. on saturday, we put on our very first bout at mardi gras world and it was quite possibly the coolest thing happening in the city (all the king's men can bite me - roller derby is way better than the fictionalization of huey p. long). the bout was a huge success - we sold out before we'd even finished setting up the track on saturday morning and they were turning folks away at the door. i skated as a referee, along with henry roll-ins, lionel hurtz, and ms. pacjam among others. we also had hambone and ginger snap from the gotham girls in new york guest ref-ing and guest-announcing respectively. they were kickass and i feel honored to have ref-ed and drank with them. if i could honestly describe how awesome saturday was, i would. but i can't. so i won't go trying to fuck it up. it reaffirmed for me that becoming a rollergirl was the right thing to do. it is really what i needed in my life to get my butt kicked back into the world in rough and tumble style. sure, most of the world didn't meet much more than my butt flying by them as i chased after jammers, but hey--it's a start. SmasHer took some pics of the after party and when i can get photobucket to cooperate, i will post a few for the diarylandish benefit (not that anyone reads this thing anymore--according to technorati--not that many more than 10 people on the planet ever read this but they will see the stripe-edness whether they like it or not!) i broke the news to the big boss today over video-conference that yes, i am a rollergirl. after my manager's flustered response to this on friday, i never thought i'd be able to look the big boss in the eye ever again. surprisingly, he thought it was the best thing he'd heard all day. well, at least i could give somebody a good laugh. now here's hoping he wasn't particularly serious about enlisting the firm's marketing folks to see about spreading the news. good for the league, yes, but i'm unsure what that'll do for me day-to-day on the job. why i am even worried about this? i shouldn't be. i won't be. screw it. i want to change jobs eventually anyway, right? right. roller derby rules!! |
